Getting started
There is no install step, so this is shorter than it looks. It is mostly about what happens after you press play — where your scores go, and what to do on the rare occasion nothing appears.
What you need
A browser released in the last few years, and that is genuinely the list. Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge are all fine, on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops alike. You do not need an account, an app store, a plug-in, or a particularly fast connection once the game has loaded.
- Install
- None. The URL is the game
- Account
- None, for any game
- Input
- Touch or mouse
- Offline
- No — the first load needs a connection
- Cost
- Free, with nothing to buy inside
Phone or desktop
Every game is built around a single pointer, so a thumb is a first-class input rather than a compromise. On a phone, portrait is the orientation the games are laid out for. Break Works needs it: on a phone of ordinary proportions held sideways it cannot really be played, so turn the device upright before starting a stage.
On a desktop the main advantage is precision. Block Pong is easier to aim with a mouse than a thumb, and so is a wrecking ball.
Where your progress lives
On your device. Best distances, best scores and the difficulty tier you last played are written to your browser's own local storage, and that is the only copy.
There are three practical consequences worth knowing before you set a record:
- Records do not travel. A best set on your phone is not on your laptop. Nothing is syncing, because nothing knows who you are.
- Clearing site data clears them. "Clear browsing data" with site data ticked will take your scores with it, and there is no backup to restore from.
- Private windows forget. A private or incognito window usually discards local storage when it closes, so a run set there will not be there tomorrow.
Because that means accounts, and accounts mean holding personal data on people who only wanted to knock a stack of crates over. Keeping scores on the device is the version of this trade-off we prefer. What we do collect is set out in the プライバシーポリシー.
Data and battery
Break Works is a 3D game and downloads close to a megabyte the first time you open it; after that the browser caches most of it. The other two are lighter. All three are animated in real time, which is more work for a phone than reading a web page, so a long session will use battery at roughly the rate any game does. None of them plays audio until you have pressed something — browsers do not allow it, and neither would we.
When a game will not start
Rare, but the causes are usually one of these, in the order worth trying:
- Reload the page. A partial first load — a dropped connection halfway through — accounts for most black screens.
- Check hardware acceleration. Break Works needs WebGL. If it is disabled in your browser's settings, or the browser has fallen back to software rendering, the game will either refuse to start or run very slowly.
- Try without extensions. Aggressive content blockers and script blockers occasionally take out the game bundle along with everything else. A private window is the fastest way to test that theory.
- Close some tabs. On phones especially, a 3D game asking for memory that is not there is quietly reloaded by the operating system.
- Tell us. If none of that helps, Support explains what to include so the problem is reproducible.
